Surgery at Total Care Vets

Our top priorities when caring for your pet during any surgical procedure are safety and comfort. We achieve this through: preparation, stabilisation and pain control medication.

Preparation

We offer a full pre-anaesthetic blood workup to assess liver and kidney function, glucose, proteins and red blood cells. This test finds hidden issues in 10-20% of pets that appear completely healthy, which affects critical decisions on how your pet could react to anaesthetics. Knowing these health status markers allows us to adjust doses, change the anaesthetic plan, or even cancel the procedure if the risks are too high.

Stabilisation

during the procedure we supply IV fluids throughout the entire time your pet is asleep. Anaesthetics and surgery can lower blood pressure and reduce blood flow to vital organs. IV fluids work to keep blood pressure stable, protect the heart, liver and kidneys, improve oxygen delivery, speed up wound healing and reduce the chance of complications. This is critical for older pets, sick pets or longer operations. Even for routine desexing we strongly recommend IV fluids for optimal safety.

Medication

We do all we can to ensure your pet remains comfortable before, during and after the procedure, with a balanced pain relief plan. Pets feel pain just as we do, sometimes even more, and uncontrolled pain elevates stress which slows healing and raises risks of other problems. Our pain control plans adhere to best-practice post-surgical standards, adjusted to account for species, age, temperament and lifestyle factors. Not too much or too little.

Every part of Total Care Vet’s surgical care plan is discussed and agreed upon in consultation with you before the planned surgery.  We try to give you all the information so you can make the best decision for your pet.
